As a registered nurse, Susie Ferracciolo is knowledgeable about the medical, biological and physiological intricacies of Type 1 Diabetes. As the mother of a son with Type 1, she also intimately understands the emotional, psychological and financial aspects that come along with caring for a child who has been diagnosed with Type 1.
Susie Ferracciolo has been an RN since 1995 and is also a retired Navy Reserve Veteran; having served for 24 years as both an enlisted service member and a Naval Officer. She was also formerly involved with JDRF in their Annual fundraising walks and community outreach. She currently works for Ascension St Vincent as a substitute school nurse, serving all the schools in Carmel and Zionsville, Indiana. In that role for 10 years now, she has noticed that she is caring for more and more Type 1 students every year. She has also witnessed first hand how the use of insulin pumps and CGMs has positively impacted a student’s control of their blood sugar; both at school and at home. These medical devices as well as insulin can be a financial burden to attain. This is why she is so happy to be part of Diabetes Wills Way; a non profit organization whose mission is to give a one time assist to families of Type 1 children and young adults that helps bridge the gap between insurance and out of pocket costs.
Susie is passionate about educating fellow parents, teachers, administrators and even family members that although Type 1 is a serious disease, with some monitoring and modification each diagnosed child could and should have all the same opportunities, experiences, travel adventures and Food as everyone else!
